Description

The history of the Carpano brand begins in Turin in 1786, when Antonio Benedetto Carpano, after completing his training as an herbalist, invented a formula that was supposed to give the world a new category of vermouth. The recipe combined herbs and spices with nutmeg. Soon Antonio opened his own wine store, which, as fate would have it, was located directly opposite the Royal Palace. Confident of the appeal of his new product, he sent a box of vermouth to King Vittorio Amedeo III. The king was so amazed by the immediate taste of the drink that he ordered Carpano’s vermouth to be made one of the main ones at the royal court. The Carpano wine store has become the city's main attraction. In 1820, Giuseppe Bernardino Carpano, Antonio's nephew, being manager of the shop, decided to give his enterprise a legal structure, creating the "Fabbrica di Liquori e Vermut" Giuseppe Carpano.

Between 1840 and 1888, Carpano's reputation grew and a glass of vermouth became a favorite aperitif among the people of Turin. In 1898, as the business continued to expand, the third-generation brothers Luigi and Ottavio, who realized the limitations of their small wine shop, decided to establish a distillery. The First World War marked the beginning of huge changes in the history of the enterprise. In 1939, after the outbreak of World War II, the business was sold to Silvio Turati, a major industrialist from Turin. The new owner decided not to change the traditional style of vermouth, and despite many technological advances and innovations over the years, the basic product remained the same. In 1950, an active advertising campaign began to promote Carpano vermouth to the international market. Over the next few decades, the company continued to consolidate its operations by distributing its products throughout the world. In 2001, the Carpano brand was acquired by the Milanese company Fratelli Branca.
