"Zodiac" (the Latvian. Zodiaks, Russian. Zodiak) — the Soviet and Latvian band playing mainly instrumental music in a sinta genre. "Zodiac" was one of the first Soviet groups which were full electronic music. The main subject of compositions are space and science fiction (in the mid-eighties the group changed subject).
Tool group of Zodiak under control of Yanis Lusens (was born on April 7, 1959) was organized in the late seventies by students of the Latvian state conservatory it. Ya. Vitola on the basis of department of electronic musical instruments. Active part in formation of Zodiak was taken also by musicians of the amateur jazz Arch rock group under the leadership of Yuris Kulakovs and the famous Riga sound producer, the conductor and the composer Alexander Griva who wrote down the two first a group album (his daughter Zahn played in the first structure of group on keyboard and sang).
Ensemble began to execute unusual to the Soviet platform electronic sintezatornuyu music with "space" sounds: Yanis Lusens was influenced by such musicians as Tangerine Dream, Space, Jean Michel Jarre, Mike Oldfield, Vangelis. The debut album Disco Alliance was released in 1980. Then the Latvian musicians wrote a soundtrack to the documentary about astronauts "A star palette", during work having visited the Star city and having got acquainted with astronauts. Names of compositions on the following album "Muzyka in the Universe" unambiguously send to space subject. In 1982 the ensemble successfully acted in Moscow in the variety program "Youth of Baltic" passing within the final concert of the Moscow Stars festival devoted to the 60 anniversary of formation of the USSR and the XIX congress of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League.
After the successful performance in Moscow offered Yanis Lusens tours across the USSR, but he refused as for this purpose it should leave study in conservatory therefore it could be called up for military service. Finally Lusens left the first structure of group and began to work in the field of the academic music.
Record of Zodiak were sold out across the USSR in big circulations. According to Melodiya, till August 26, 1983 5,848,980 copies of Disco Alliance and 1,703,800 — Muzyka in the Universe were sold. Compositions of group were widely used for musical execution of movies and telecasts.
Latest number album of Zodiak was released in 1988 and "In memoriam" was called ("In memory"). Eto the conceptual album devoted to the Latvian culture and Righis architecture. On it the composer Lusens who came back for a while to electronic music showed some bias towards art fate. After the collapse of the USSR the ensemble stopped existence, but from the middle of the 2000th started over again acting, executing old material.
B 2015 the group released the album "Pacific Time" containing modern processings of compositions from the first two albums of group and also two new compositions.
