The Contours ‎ – Do You Love Me/Move, Mr. Man (GORDY 7005, USA, 1962).
"Do You Love Me" is the hit of 1962 which is written down by The Contours group on Gordy Records label for a label of Motown. Author and producer: the CEO of Motown Berri of Gordi Jr., "Do You Love Me" was the only single The Contours in Top 40 in the United States. It is remarkable that this record was reached twice: once in 1962 (No. 3) and once again in 1988 (No. 11). Berris
Gordi wrote the song for The Temptations. However when Gordi wanted the song, the group on the place did not appear (The Temptations were not informed on Gordis intentions and left recording studio).
Having spent some time for search of The Temptations, Gordi faced in a corridor of studio The Contours (Billey Gordon, Hubert Johnson, Billey Hoggs, Joe Billingsley, Sylvester Potts and the guitarist Hugh Davies). Wishing to record the song as soon as possible, Gordi solved the "an unconditional hit" to them instead of The Temptations. The Contours to which loss of the contract with a label threatened after their first two singles ("Whole Lotta Woman" and "The Stretch") did not get to charts were so inspired with Gordis proposal that they began to embrace and thank him.
"Do You Love Me", the fifth release on Gordy Records, became especially successful dancing song constructed on the shouting Gordons vocal. Sales with a circulation more than one million copies reached the third place in Billboard Hot 100 within three weeks, since October 20, 1962, and became hit number one in a chart of Billboard R & B Singles. Also the album "Do You Love Me (Now That I Can Dance)" was released. Any of future singles The Contours did not achieve success of "Do You Love Me" though it made group on headliners in the Motor Town Revue tour.
"Do You Love Me" is the evidence of talent of Gordi as musician, producer, arranger and author of songs. As a result not only the classical rocknroll, but also the evidence of its growth as greatest talent in the history of fate turned out. Gordi considered the song as an example of musical synthesis of a rhythm-and-blues, pop music and a rocknroll. "Pesnya was recorded as a rhythm-and-blues, but by then reached a point of half a million, and it was considered as pop music. And if we did not write down it with Black actors, it would be considered as a rocknroll".
"Do You Love Me" appears in the movie of 1987 "Dirty dances". Republished as a single from an album of a soundtrack "More Dirty Dancing", the song became a hit for the second time, having reached the eleventh place in Billboard Hot 100 in August, 1988. The Contours by then consisting of Joe Billingsley and three new participants among others participated in "Dirty Dancing Tour" in support of the movie.
Pesnya entered also soundtracks to movies "Wanderers" (1979), "Sleepwalkers" (1992) and "On an equal basis with the father" (1994). Pesnya also sounded in the movie of 1993 "Beethoven 2" where George Newton (Charles Grodin) dances under the song in preparation time of a breakfast. In the movie "Wolf Cub 2" it was sung by Jason Bateman. Plastinks
