Fifth studio album American funk - and the psychodelic Sly and the Family Stone soul group. It was recorded from 1970 to 1971 in Record Plant studio in Sausalito, California, and it is released the same year on November 1 on Epic Records label. In recording of the album the lead singer of group Slay Stone during the use of drugs and intra group tension dominated. Its music included more gloomy and more difficult sounding, than optimistic style of the previous releases of group, with use of rigid funk rhythms, primitive drum machines, extensive imposings and a dense mix. The planned name of an album was "Africa Talks to You", but it was changed in response to Marvin Gayes album "Whats Going On" released half a year ago.
After an exit an album won first place in charts of Billboard Pop Album and Soul Album, and its main single "Family Affair" headed Pop Singles charts. By 2001 it was sold one million copies, and it became platinum. Received ambiguous assessment after its release, the album is praised as one of the greatest and most influential records of all times now, and it is high on the list in lists of the best albums of many editions.
