BURN are the eighth studio album of the British Deep Purple group and the first, "Mark 3" which are written down by structure, came in February, 1974 to EMI/Purple (in Great Britain) and Warner Bros. in the USA.
BURN was written down in November, 1973 in Montreux, Switzerland (Mobile Studio The Rolling Stones). Under the influence of beginners - the vocalist David Koverdeyl and the bass guitarist/vocalist Glenn Hughes - sounding of Deep Purple became more blues, elements of funk and a soul began to be shown.
In spite of the fact that the Burn song became a big hit, and its main melody concedes on recognition only of legendary "Smoke on the Water", actually very few people know that the riff of this composition was borrowed George Gershwin from "Fascinating Rhythm/Someone to Watch Over Me". Having become a hit, "Burn" within the next two years opened all concerts of Deep Purple. However after reunion of group in the Mark 2 format with Ian Gillan as the vocalist this song in general dropped out of the repertoire as Gillan refused to sing songs by Koverdeyl. Nevertheless, Steve Mors who came to replacement to Blackmore first played the main riff from "Burn" in the concert version "Speed King".
Glen Hughes was not designated as the coauthor of a number of songs owing to contractual obligations. On reprinting of 2004 his name was included.
