"Wooly Bully" is the popular song which is initially written down by the innovative rocknroll Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs group in 1965. Based on a standard 12-stroke blues progression, it was written by the lead singer of group, Domingo "Sam" Samudio, Byla is let out as a single on a small label of XL in Memphis in 1964 and MGM is acquired in 1965. Pesnya was recorded in recording studio of Sam Phillips on Madison Avenue, 639, in Memphis where the original studio Sun Phillips moved. Eto appeared the only record made in studio.
"Wooly Bully" was the first and most popular hit of group. On had the world success, three million copies were sold, it occupied No. 2 in a chart of American Hot 100 from June 5 to June 12, 1965, at top there were The Beach Boys "Help Me, Rhonda" and The Supremes "Back in My Arms Again". Eto was the first American plate sold by one million copies during the British invasion and it was influenced by the British rock sound mixed with a traditional meksikano-American rhythm "konyyunto". On remained in Hot 100 within 18 weeks, the most long time for any song in 1965, and it was nominated for the Grammy award. Byla is called by Billboard the best song this year in spite of the fact that did not reach No. 1. On August 5, 1965 the single was certified by RIAA as "gold". Later the song was included in an album "Wooly Bully" of 1965.
"Wooly Bully" is the processed melody of 1962 of "Hully Gully Now" on Gay Shel label in Dallas from Big Bo & The Arrows (Little Smitty vocal) based on "Feelin Good" Junior Parker. Pesnya was given green light after Sam rewrote lyrics, cool replacing "Hully Gully" with "Wooly Bully" and several additional lyrical changes. Sam kept "to watch it, to look now" to abstain from the initial version. [8]
Lyrics was difficult to be understood, and some radio stations forbade it. Sam Shem emphasizes the Texas-Mexican nuance of a song, counting a rhythm in Spanish and English ("Uno! Dos! One, two, tres, cuatro!"). "My cat called Vuli Buli therefore I began with him. The countdown in the song was also not planned. I just idled and, actually, I wanted it to be removed from record. We made three doubles, all of them were different, and they took the first double and released it".
