This Entire Album Is Dedicated To The Memory Of Felix Pappalardi.
Weighing in at 34 tracks, including a couple of unissued numbers with Noel Redding, this 2-CD showcases the oeuvre of one of heavy rock’s pioneering outfits. Despite a number of lesser cuts, the majority are heavyduty numbers. Fuelled by Corky Laing’s rhythms and topped by Leslie West’s consummate guitar and vocals, there are a host of Cream-like confections, from the fuzz-laden opener Blood Of The Sun, to the likes of Dreams Of Milk & Honey, the breezy Silver Paper and Jack Bruce co-write, Theme From An Imaginary Western. It also has an air of Procol Harum about it, with filigreed keyboard work, as on the baroque Travellin’ In The Dark. Other standouts include the bluesy Blind Man, catchy Leafhound-style Never In My Life, Creedence-esque Sittin’ On A Rainbow, and the classic World In Action TV theme, Nantucket Sleighride. There’s perhaps a surfeit of pianorock, and the last four latterday tunes are inessential, but otherwise a fine summary.
