He had to cope with a variety of health problems over the years. In the mid-80s he was diagnosed with diabetes, and in 2011 diabetic complications forced him to have his right lower leg amputated. In the early 2000s he survived bladder cancer. Leslie West, who has died aged 75 following a cardiac arrest, could claim to be one of the creators of heavy metal.
