Group was founded in 1975 in East Berlin, the capital of the GDR. "Karat" is created on the remains a jazz rock fusion of the Panta Rhei group from East Berlin, lost the most part of the supporters in 1973 when the vocalist of group, Veronika Fischer, started a solo career. The Panta Rhei group stopped activity in 1975 because three more musicians created new group - "Karat". Initial structure of group: the vocalist of Hans-Joachim "Neumi" Neumann, the keyboard player and the author of Ulrich "Ed" Swillms songs, the bass player of Henning Protzmann, the drummer of Konrad "Conny" Burkert, guitarists - acoustic: Herbert Dreilich and electric: Ulrich Pexa. Next year Burkert left, it was replaced by Michael Schwandt, and Pexa - Bernd Römer. Neumann left "Karat" in 1977 because it is called up for military service, after it Herbert Dreilich became the vocalist of group.
K 1978 of "Karat" released several singles which were collected together with new songs in a debut album of the same name. Though the most part of this material was rather unpretentious, but it contained the hit single "König Der Welt" ("the King Mira"), the song which was selected as the corporate style of "Karat" established later with the melodious brand of progressive fate. The poet of Kurt Demmler wrote words to this song which as there are a lot of late songs in Karat style and had philosophical character.
"Karat" also received subsequently great popularity in West Germany when its album "Der Blaue Planet" ("The Blue Planet") released in 1982 which became one of albums which were on sale during 1982 in East and Western parts of Germany better that does "Karat" by one of the most famous groups of German-speaking rock music.
