Down In The Groove seems more like a get together for Dylan and some of his mates than a serious album. Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Jerry Garcia, Ron Wood and pop rocker Kip Winger all make contributions. There are only four original Dylan compositions and two of those are penned jointly with the Grateful Deads Robert Hunter. One, however, is a little gem: "Death Is Not The End", which was later covered to brilliant effect by Nick Cave and included on his masterpiece Murder Ballads. The album depicts an almost cynical attitude of releasing a product with little artistic merit in the hope that the readies will keep on rolling in. Either that or sheer laziness because the songs that Dylan has had a hand in are by far the best things on here.
Not Down In The Groove, more like down in a rut.
