The Beatles Featuring Tony Sheridan-THE BEATLES’ FIRST!: Deluxe Edition-2CD-1961-1964/2004-
- Polydor/Universal Music Domestic Division-0602498213230-700 grn
HISTORICAL NOTE: Before Deutsche Grammophon established its Polydor Incorporated pop imprint in 1969, U.S. releases of the Beatles/Sheridan material were split between three labels: American Decca, MGM Records (both now part of Universal Music Group), and Atlantic Records ATCO label, now owned by Warner Music Group. Savage Records THE SAVAGE YOUNG BEATLES was a bootleg. THE BEATLES FIRST track listing is essentially the same as the U.S. In the Beginning CD, except that "My Bonnie" appears without its English intro, and "Sweet Georgia Brown" appears with its revisionist 1964 "Beatles haircut" lyrics, as issued on the original In the Beginning: Circa 1960 LP. The IN THE BEGINNING CD mistakenly uses the 1961 Tony Sheridan version of "Sweet Georgia Brown" with the original lyrics, but no Beatles backing. Tonys Beat Brothers version of "Ya Ya" does appear in its full two-part version, as it does on all CD releases; most LPs have only Part 1. The "German intro" and "English intro" versions of "My Bonnie" appear as bonus tracks on the stereo CD; mono CD has the same lineup, with two additional Sheridan songs thrown in for good measure: Sheridans cover version of Chubby Checkers "Lets Twist Again", and Tonys own composition, "Top Ten Twist." The stereo mixes of these two tracks can be found on Repertoire Records hard-to-find CD issue of the 1962 Sheridan album My Bonnie, which only has two songs with Beatles backing: "My Bonnie" and" (When) of The Saints (Go Marching In)." It would also have been nice for Universal/Polydor to include the 1962 version of "Sweet Georgia Brown", with the original lyrics set to The Beatles backing track. But they did not; that version appears on the Bear Family and Time-Life collections, as well as on the DVD The Beatles with Tony Sheridan. As with all of Universals Deluxe Edition reissues, double CD (both disks have 1960s red Polydor labels) comes in a see-through slipcase with the track listing on the back. The digipak has a variation of the original cover art, and contains many rare photos and period documentation, as does the accompanying booklet. Sadly, Tony Sheridans original 1964 liner notes are not in the booklet, but they have been replaced by a very entertaining essay, written in German by music writer Joachim Hentschel, with an English translation by Veronika Gruber. For those who do not care about alternate versions, and just want the Beatles/Sheridan material as originally issued, this set is for you.
