George Harrison-BRAINWASHED-CD - 2002 Umlaut Corporation/EMI Records Limited-724354196928-300 grn
BRAINWASHED is the twelfth and final studio album by George Harrison. On 29 November 2001, Harrison died, leaving BRAINWASHED unfinished, but with a guide to completing it in the hands of his son and long-time collaborator and close friend, Jeff Lynne. After a few months away from the project, both the younger Harrison and Lynne returned to working on Georges final songs and added the appropriate instruments, as per their composers specifications, to complete his final album.
BRAINWASHED is a warm, frank goodbye, remarkably poised record about the reality of dying, by a man on the verge. BRAINWASHED suggests that Harrisons last years were largely comfortable, slow-paced and unaffected by any worries about his relevance. A mature and often profound record. Beautifully fatalistic and unimposingly pedagogical, BRAINWASHED is quite possibly Harrisons next-to-best album and a sober reminder that his passing is a loss too large to measure. Harrison never seemed to recognize the difference between philosophical profundities and the sound of a catchy song, and that may have been his greatest gift to the world. BRAINWASHED offers a fine, final reminder of that gift.
Completed by George Harrisons son Dhani and Jeff Lynne (Traveling Wilburys, Cloud Nine) after the ex-Beatle succumbed to a long illness in November 2001, Brainwashed is a bittersweet reminder of the myriad contradictions that made Harrison such a compelling figure. One of the most warm, melodically rich albums in a career pockmarked by personal frankness and professional indifference in its latter years, Harrison finds rewarding ways here to reconcile bitter assessments of the material world (title track) with more fleshly concerns, as his jaunty take on the Arlen-Koehler chestnut "The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" ably demonstrates. Pushing the singers distinctive dry voice to the forefront, and with Harrisons trademark slide guitar riffs as sinewy as ever, Lynnes showcase production is mostly spot-on and refreshingly restrained, while Dhani brings his own fresh, touchingly personal insights to the record. He double-tracked his own voice onto an old recording of his father chanting the traditional "Namah Parvati" and appended it as the albums spiritual benediction, touching reminder that while musicians come and go, music can truly embody their spirit forever.
