The Best of Mountain is the first compilation by American hard rock band Mountain. It consists of material recorded throughout 1969-1971, culled from their first three LPs. On 15 April 2003, album was remastered and reissued in an expanded edition with new liner notes and FOUR BONUS TRACKS, two of which are taken from Leslie Wests first solo album, 1969s Felix Pappalardi - produced Mountain, the project which eventually led to the formation of the band.
The band centered around singer/guitarist Leslie West, whose beefed-up Clapton riffs served as the basis for the bands blues-based power rock, while bassist Felix Pappalardi and drummer Corky Laing proved to be a mammoth rhythm section. Only their finest songs are included here, highlights being the sexed-up anthem "Mississippi Queen", as well as the psychedelic ballad "Nantucket Sleighride", fierce heavy metal rocker "Never in My Life", and the melodic "Theme for an Imaginary Western", Latter penned by ex-Cream bassist Jack Bruce.
If you do not own a Mountain Albums, this is where to start. Three guys and a mountain of sound-it does not get better than this selection of songs, unless you buy the albums. I wore out the vinyl years ago, so this is a nice replacement on CD with bonus tracks that make it an even better value. The beer commercial a few years back brought Mississippi Queen out of the archives with drums as the lead instrument (WOW!), Never In My Life and others are part of the pinnacle of rock and roll.
