Pesnya was born on a rehearsal of The Dukays, vocal group into which entered Chandler (a real name - Eugene Dixon) and Earl Edwards. The group was regularly warmed, singing "Do do do do..." in different tonalities. Once Dixon changed "text", having inserted a name of Earl, and "Du.du.du.Duke of Earl" turned out. Couple worked over the song with the author of songs and the tutor Bernice Williams, and then wrote down it with other participants of The Dukays. However the record company preferred to release other song, "Nite Owl", having suggested Dixon to let out her as to the solo performer. Dixon changed the name to Jean Chandler (the surname is taken from a surname of the actor Jeff Chandler), and the song was released at the end of 1961, having quickly risen to No. 1 in charts of bottoms and a rhythm-and-blues. "Duke Of Earl" debuted in a chart of Billboard Hot 100 13 of January, 1962 and won first place within three weeks. On spent to Hot 100 in total 15 weeks.
