The 1982 television production strengthened the success of the Hitchhiker's book series, and the 2005 full-length film, with a budget of $50 million, doubled the costs of the film adaptation and was nominated for 7 awards.

The popularity of the satirical “trilogy in five parts” spilled over into the music and computer industries. Thus, the bands Radiohead, Coldplay, NOFX use quotes from Adams’ novel, and Level 42 is named after the main storyline of the novel.

The heroes of the no less cult film "Men in Black" shamelessly use the sarcastic dialogues of Adams' characters.
